The World Lined-up, Prayed and Bid Farewell to President Cory Aquino – “Her Path Made of Integrity”

The World Fall In Line to Extend their Love, Gratitude and Prayers to Cory Aquino – Frankfurt Germany

In our trip to Germany, we went to mass at St. Catherine church one Saturday when we learned that there is an English mass. When we entered the church, we noticed that the majority of the parishioners are Filipinos. We met a lot of Filipinos there and we were even able to sign the condolence book for our late Pres. Cory Aquino which we were not able to do while we are in Manila.

I was so happy when I learned that they have a condolence book for the late President Cory Aquino. And I was proud that time when I saw other nationals signing the guest book too as it goes to show how well respected and well loved Pres Cory Aquino is, not just to Filipinos abroad but to other nationalities as well. This just show that if you live a life of integrity, honesty and faith in God, you can have a deep impact on other person’s lives because this is how Pres. Cory Aquino has inspired us Filipinos.

My thoughts…..

Integrity is a very clear line, it’s either you have it or you don’t. It’s not hard to achieve if we have faith in God and been a good follower no matter where we are or what we do. This ethical virtue echoes and can transform others to have hope and to do good deeds by being an example to others. Holding what is the truth, performing what is righteous and having faith among men…

Cory embodied this virtue…

Moral hope: Enriched appreciation of the possibilities of using rational dialogue in resolving moral conflicts

Where can we find moral hope?
How hard can it be?

Electronic Moral Hope

After several weeks of vacation, I’m now reading and cleaning more that 1000 emails and this email caught my attention…

Eliminate Negative Self-Talk
by Rick Warren

"Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts" (Proverbs 4:23 GN).

Long before psychology came around, God said your thoughts determine your feelings and your feelings determine your actions. If you want to change your life, you've got to control the way you think.

Our minds are really an amazing creation. It would take a computer the size of a small city just to carry out the basic functions of your brain. Your brain contains over one hundred billion nerve cells. Each individual cell is connected with ten thousand other neurons.

In addition, you're constantly talking to yourself--all the time. Your mind is talking to you! You're talking to yourself right now. Research indicates that most people speak at a rate of 150 to 200 words per minute, but the mind can listen to about 500-600 words a minute. That's why you can listen to me and plan today's dinner at the same time.

In fact, our internal dialogue--the conversation we have with ourselves--is at a rate of 1,300 words per minute. How? Because our mind sees in pictures, and you can see a thought in a nano-second!

The problem is a lot of us are like Job, who says, "Everything I say seems to condemn me" (Job 9:20 GN). He is saying, in effect, "Everything I say puts me down." If you are typical to the human race, you are your own worst critic.

We're always putting ourselves down. We walk into a room smiling, but inside we're thinking, "I’m fat. I'm dumb. I'm ugly. And I'm always late!"

God wants us to stop putting ourselves down. When you put yourself down, who are you really putting down? When you say, "I'm fat. I'm dumb. I'm ugly. I'm no good. I have no talent," you're really pointing to the Creator who made you. When you say, "God, I'm worthless. I'm no good. I can't do anything," you're saying, "God, you blew it with me." That's why God says it's wrong to put yourself down.

How do you eliminate negative self-talk so you can become a more confident person?

The Bible teaches the principle of replacement: "Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right . . . Think about all you can thank God for and be glad about" (Philippians 4:8 TLB).

In other words, don't think about all those weaknesses in your life. Focus on who God wants you want to be and on what God wants to do in your life. I don't know any better antidote to low self-esteem (or to facing your hurts, habits, and hang-ups) than to read God's word every day: study it, memorize it, meditate on it, and apply it in your life.

There isn't a better thing you can do to raise your confidence level than to start believing what God says about you. As I read through the Bible, chapter by chapter, I find a verse that speaks to me. I write it down on a card, memorize it, and then I start affirming it back to God. "Father, thank you that I am valuable; I am significant; I am forgivable; I am capable." Let God renew your mind because "your life is shaped by your thoughts" (Proverbs 4:23 GN).

My thoughts…..

To better understand moral conflicts, there must be a dialogue between men. This email I receive taught me something about internal dialogue which is within me.

Sometimes we demonstrate anger, we give up hope, we deny others their point of view and we neglect reasons maybe because it is present in our lives. So for us to be able to have a rational dialogue with our fellow, let’s start learning about our own character first and foremost.

We think of these negative taught about ourselves so we want others to think like us. But if we have a sound life, we have self-appreciation, self confidence; we will do the same for our brothers. We can listen to them and we can see them eye to eye.

Accepting who we are and what we have is living a happy positive life which provides a moral hope to others.

Trait 8: Tolerance of diversity

Tolerance of diversity: Within a broad range, respect for ethnic and religious differences, and acceptance of reasonable differences in moral perspectives

The Holy See

A Line to Papal Audience – An Unfathomable Experience

The first group of Filipinos that we met was in St. Leonard church in Frankfurt. The Alcantara family was one of the Filipino families that we met after the mass and they accompanied us to the bus station where we will take our ride to Prague. They even offered to take us to Heidelberg (where you can find Rizal’s monument because Howell was really interested to go there), but since our bus leaves that evening, we have to beg off their offer.

The next group of Filipinos that we met in Venice was siblings Meg, Danny and Chito and they are traveling together with Fr. Lito (who is base in Rome) and his mother. We had dinner together and we really hit it off and we are laughing like crazy as if we have known each other for such a long time already. Since they are going back to Rome the same time we are there, they even invited us to have dinner at Fr. Lito’s house in Rome.

We learned that they are also planning to attend the Papal Audience and since Fr. Lito’s house is near the Pope’s summer house where the Papal audience will be held the next day (which is 1 hr travel from Rome downtown), they did not let us went back to our hotel but instead they accommodated us at Fr. Lito’s house so we will be early for the Papal Audience.

It was an unbelievable experience, our tears fell down the very second we see the Pope. My husband and I can’t believe it that we are actually in the presence of a human being yet he has that aura of peace and love all over him. You can hear the crowd cheering his name “Benedicto! Benedicto!” as if they are calling him to shower us with God’s love which he did. We are so touch when he said, “I bless all of you and I extend my blessing to your family and love ones who are not with you today, who are at your home, at your country.”

My thoughts…..

During that day, the audience is from different countries and from several continents but cheering only of one name, which is the Pope’s.

He embodied the tolerance of diversity; he embraces all regardless of color, religions and other differences.

Trait 7: Respect for persons

Respect for persons: Genuine concern for the well-being of others as well as oneself.

Does Money Change Everything?

Boyet the Bull

Have you heard of the scene caused by this arrogant and not heard of Filipino fashion designer Angelino Boyet Fajardo at Duty Free Philippines? He threw his passport to the cashier after the innocent cashier who is just doing his job asked for any identification card from him because his credit card is unsigned. The cashier also received harsh words from Fajardo and Fajardo even threatened him that he will loose his job because he knows a lot of politicians. Fajardo even asked the cashier to kneel down before him and ask for apology. Maybe because of the fear of loosing his job, the cashier obliged to Fajardo’s request.

My thoughts…..

I wish to think of the lesson in the garbage truck story but this is quite different. It’s no longer a person with so much garbage in his life but a successful one with his products being sold at the big department stores; he must be blessed in one way or another.

But arrogance is a different thing; it should be taught or dealt with proper punishment. We cannot allow person disrespect another because it’s dishonoring one’s right for equality and justice.

Trait 6: Moral reasonableness

Moral reasonableness: The willingness and ability to be morally reasonable.

Philippine Medical System
Why do we let people in pain suffer more?

Poor service at Chinese General Hospital

I have made several posts in my blog on how poor the service of Chinese General is. My family has a history of having high blood pressure and several times, we have to rush our aunt to the emergency room every time she BP rises. And every time we rush her to the Emergency room of Chinese General especially in the wee hours of the morning, we always get bad service from them. Like when we rushed our aunt to ER, there was no doctor present to attend to my aunt as all of them is either missing in action or is sleeping (I was shocked to discover that the person in the bed beside my aunt is indeed the doctor on duty). My cousin got hospitalized just last week and before they were allowed to get a room, they have to be interviewed first. They were asked about their job, their source of income, their salary and they will categorize you based on your salary on what type of room you can get. And I was like, what kind of service is this. Chinese General is the nearest hospital in our area so this is really our first option if we have an emergency but if we only have other options, I will never ever let my love ones be subjected with this kind of service to think that CGH is a private hospital and they should really learn how to treat paying customers well, with respect and with real care.

My thoughts…..

I would like to be reasonable but how can I do it in time of emergency? We should be calm and respectful all the time like what my mom did. She asked my dad to step outside and she’ll handle it from there and good thing that my aunt is ok now but our medical hospitals should be reasonable all the time because they are service providers which accommodate all persons with equal treatment.

Now they have this screening phase where they’ll ask you first of your financial background before they can admit you to a room. If you are poor, no matter what your condition is, you’ll stay in the ward room. Is this reasonable? I don’t think so.

Subject: FW: FOLLOW THE LAW OF "GARBAGE TRUCKS"

Few weeks ago, I received an email from my former colleague with a subject “Follow the Law of Garbage Trucks.” Below is the message, I’m not sure if it’s his experience or somebody else’s.

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We
were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a
parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his
brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of
the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. In addition, I
mean he was friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy
almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my
taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run
around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of
disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it
and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just
smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and
spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage
trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning
with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the
ones who don't.'

My thoughts…..

When you have time, try to search this post at http://www.filipinasoul.com/are-filipinos-rude-by-nature/ and read about an Australian’s view of our nature.

Sad to say, almost majority of his comments about us are true. And another sad thing is that, it only shows in the people living in Metro Manila but if we go to the provinces, the folks and kids still personifies what we used to be known to the world, hospitable, kind, cheerful and has a good command of English language.

Kids here in the metro have no more respect for the elders, for the authorities or even to their peers and friends. You may ask “What went wrong?” The number one answer for that which I can think of is parenting. These people whom they called as parents or guardians are no longer capable of nurturing them because of poverty and the deficiency of proper education.

Because of their empty stomach, they allow them to do petty misdemeanor, until it becomes a habit, they now steal bigger things up until the use a knife or gun to commit crimes. Ultimately they ended up in jail, the parents or relatives seeks now the assistance of a politician, he gives some money, they borrowed from relatives, they sell their property or worst other’s property and he’s back to the society. These types of scenarios go on and on in our community today.

When we stepped out of the taxi, were still talking about that driver inside the pedicab and we just agreed that maybe he’s not happy today but me and my husband are. We are happy because we’re going to see our daughter after being in the office and in Robinson the whole day, we are now kissing her and she will give us that embrace and the “I love you” words...

On the email I receive, I like the phrase “Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.” It really makes sense having a positive outlook so you’ll stay happy and I guess, successful…

A Very Long Journey to Poverty -
What have we done to our brothers and sisters?

Line Up Your Pushcarts for Free Education:
Efren PeƱaflorida - CNN Hero

Photo snagged from blipbit.com

Efren PeƱaflorida, a Filipino is one of those voted as a CNN hero. Efren’s group go around barangays with their make shift push cart loaded with books, papers, tables and chairs and they recreate a school setting on the streets and they teach street children the basics of reading and writing.

Every Saturday, kids aged 2-14 years old flock around Efren and his team of volunteers’ push cart to learn reading, writing, English, Arithmetic and even the basic hygiene. The groups is really successful as they have inspired a lot of street children, former gang members, drug addicts, and even drop outs to pursue their studies and be an effective member of the community. Some of them are now part of Efren’s group and is doing their share in promoting Efren’s cause.

My thoughts…..

Growing up in Tondo is not that bad at all because we have a happy family but sad to say, the greater area are really and becoming a different place. With all the money the government claims, the several responsible departments, slums, dirty water, flooded area, diseases, out of school youths, gangs and ultimately poverty is on every eskinetas and shanty houses.

And Efren came and made an imaginative approach of helping our children. Indeed, small deeds can really make a lot of difference.

Efren said "I always tell my volunteers that you are the change that you dream and I am the change that I dream. And collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

Trait 3: Moral coherence

Moral coherence: Forming consistent and comprehensive viewpoints based upon a consideration of relevant facts
“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”
Matthew 22:21

Must business choose between good ethics and financial benefits?

In my opinion, I always believe that good ethics should always be above financial benefits. We can not avoid that there will be really a short term loss for the company but I always believe that good business back by good ethics will always bring long term gains.

One example that I can give is when we are still starting our cell phone and gadget shop in Greenhills. When we are still starting, our sales are always low since we are always beaten by our competitors who sell cell phone units at a much lower price than ours.

Our competitors can afford to give prices that are hundreds (or even thousands) of pesos lower than our price because they are selling second hand units as brand new units to their customers. What they will do is they will refurbish their secondhand units (change the housing, the key pad, etc) so that it will look brand new and will sell it to their customers for the price of a brand new unit. This style is very rampant in Greenhills but it is against our ethics and principles that is why we never engage in those types of acts.

But since the units sold by our competitors are just refurbish units, majority of their clients would come back to complain once the units fail which never happened with our clients since what we are giving our clients are real brand new units which even comes with a one year warranty with the cell phone maker like Nokia and Ericson.

After a while, our clients come to trust us and our sales grew since we have loyal customers who always come back to our store since they know that we are a trustable businessman.

A lot of our competitors’ clients even transferred to us since they know that we are a businessman with good ethics.

My thoughts…..
So, we might even have a short term loss at first but our business has grown now and it is all because we practice good ethics over financial benefits.

On Matthew 22:21 states that we cannot serve two masters at the same time. If we want to serve our fellowmen or provide services, we should be consistent with our ethics and we will harvest goodness in due time.

Trait 2: Cogent moral reasoning

Cogent moral reasoning: Comprehending, clarifying, and assessing arguments on opposing sides of moral issues

My thoughts…..

Sometimes, there are things that we cannot control not to happen but whatever we do in our lives, we must always try to evaluate them, we have to at least listen to different sides so we can assess our actions or reactions.

A lot these problems rooted from young marriages, sometimes financial problems and I guess, a marriage without God as the center of their relationship…

So in my family, we allow God in our lives and we always thanked him for all his blessings he has showered us even the heartaches for it made us a stonger and happy family.

Trait 1: Moral awareness

Moral awareness: Proficiency in recognizing moral problems and issues

My thoughts…..

Moral awareness will never be recognized unless it is being shared or taught in the classroom and other medium of communication. In every field of learning and of life, we relate our actions with our moral obligations but how do we determine that other people or a community thinks the same as we do if they themselves were not aware of their malpractice and malediction.

Yes, denials of moral responsibilities will be present because their culture or ways of life is different. In this moment of time we have to assert our knowledge and experiences that others may understand the need to be morally aligned. So I salute every teacher, every lecturer, every instructor no matter how poor their salaries are, they’ve given their services so that the minds of the child and the adults will be proper and acceptable by the society otherwise every seconds of the day is chaos...

Our final exams for my Computer Ethics subject is to create an Ethics Portfolio which contains ten sections corresponding to the ten traits or skills needed to carefully reflect on moral issues. I would like to share my thougths on the different traits here....

Lines – A Portfolio

One of my treasures in life is having a family and going to places with them, reading and sharing stories with them and whatever adventure we have is a pure joy.

Along the way, we’ve met people, we learned cultures, we’ve smiled, we laughed, we experience tears and sadness, we got angry sometimes, and we became a stronger family.

I came from a family of about 30 members and relatives and a few extended ones as my Lolo tried to make an extra lineage of his legacy with three women…

Adding to our family tree is our lovely daughter, 3-year old Ysabela, a very much loved by all grandparents, aunts and uncles as well as her cousins for she’s the youngest in our family.

My husband and I work everyday and whenever possible, we go out on weekends and holidays to do our bonding with Bela and the rest of the family if budget would permit.

I chose “Lines” as my portfolio subject because I find it very interesting, I can imagine it as a very broad or complex subject yet it’s still just a very simple word. This document is diary of my thoughts and experiences, the stories I’ve read and the people I have encountered, people I have known only by chances and the places I’ve seen by my very eyes…

In Wikipedia, the word “line” can be associated with so many things, it can be associated to people, mathematics, the arts, sports and many others that is why I find it “out of the ordinary” and hope someday it can be part of my own book on ethics and life…
